Ever heard of Tea Tree Oil? This is a natural anti-septic oil harvested from the Melaleuca tree in Australia and it is a wonderful topical first aid oil that can be used on most all animals for healing cuts and wounds. Tea Tree oil will dissolve pus within a wound, without damaging the surrounding tissue, thereby allowing the wound to heal with minimal scaring.
Tea Tree Oil is a natural anti-fungal and is used in many over the counter shampoo’s and skin bracers, or so they say it’s in there. Most likely it’s either a synthetic type or a watered down mixed with what  type…but we won’t get into that right now!  It is also an ingredient used in natural insect repellents and is great for clearing up thrush making this a must for any first aid kit for all horse owners!

History

Historically, tea tree oil has provided a topical treatment that the native people of Australia have used for many years to heal wounds, abrasions and other skin problems. According to Dr. Michael Chillemi, coauthor of the book “The Complete Herbal Guide,” Australian soldiers during World War II carried tea tree oil in their first-aid kits as a treatment for any mild wounds or topical infections that they incurred during battle. In order to maintain an adequate supply of tea tree oil, tea tree oil growers were exempt from military service for a period of time during the war.

Features

According to Dr. Chillemi, active compounds present in tea tree oil include 8-cineole, terpinen-4-ol, a-terpineol and lineol. MedlinePlus states that the oil’s antimicrobial properties probably arise from the compound terpinen-4-ol. Other features of tea tree oil that may contribute to making it an effective wound care treatment include its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiseptic properties.

MUST HAVE RECIPES IN MY FIRST AID ARSENAL

Here are some great recipes you can make at home with Tea Tree Oil.

Tea Tree Oil Salve –Blend four tablespoon’s of Animal Scents ointment and add one teaspoon of tea tree oil. Stir well and allow this to set to harden. (Too much tea tree oil and it will not harden.) Use this salve for hot spots, cuts, wounds and lightly coat the inside of the horses ears to prevent those nasty flies and gnats from biting. If you have that crusty white coating on the inside of the ears, this will cure it within a month or so of application. This salve acts as a natural insect repellent!  Animal Scents Ointment is pretty dang amazing on it’s own!  Do not use near the eyes.

Disinfectant, Insect repellent,
One tsp Tea Tree Oil to one cup warm water. Place combination in a spray bottle and spray the inside of a trailer to minimize flies. Spray buckets, tools, stalls, etc., when needing to disinfect equipment. Spray your horse and yourself prior to a trail ride and prevent flies from bothering you.
Add two TBS to your wash tub when washing blankets or saddle pads and allow this to soak for 30 minutes to disinfect.

Apply Tea Tree Oil directly to cuts and wounds. It will minimize pain and eliminate itching yet stimulates healing. This makes it great for sweet itch, greasy heel, ringworm and other dermatitis’s.

For Thrush, clean foot thoroughly. With a dropper drop Tea Tree Oil directly onto frog and infected area. Place a sock over hoof and secure with vet wrap. Apply two times per day. It will take about 3-4 days of consistent cleaning and it is a natural substance to work with.

Tea Tree Oil is not meant to be taken internally but it is wonderful to dab just a bit on mouth ulcers and sore gums. (Also makes a great lip balm and hand cream.) I don’t know how I get through a summer here in Nevada’s harsh desert summer without it. Once you get to using it you will want to make an economy size container of salve. To do this, purchase One jar of  Animal Scents ointment  Stir in between 30 to 60 drops to the entire jar,  depending on how strong you want it . Animal Scents ointment does already have Tea tree in it, but your goal here is to make this ointment with the extra healing benefits of Tea Tree  for wound care  stir well and allow this to set.  Since Animal Scents is pretty hard to stir, I add mine to my Ninja bullet or food processor which makes life a whole lot easier!   Don’t forget to label it.  A little goes ALONG WAYS!

I know this is a article primarily on Tea Tree oil, but  I bet your now asking what is  Animal Scents Ointment?

Here’s a little break down for you:

Animal Scents Ointment is truly a all natural ointment that contains over eight therapeutic grade essential oils. It acts as a sealer when applied with other essential oils. It is a protective and soothing salve formulated for external use on animals.

Helps soothe skin and minor skin irritations by applying it directly on the area.

It is a fantastic horse ointment; especially, if you compare it to ingredients found in most commercially made ointments for animals. Remember there are no labeling requirements for pet products.

Therefore most of the ingredients are not even listed on the container! Animal Scents salve contains no synthetic compounds or harmful chemicals.

Although this product was designed for animal use, it can be used safely on people as well. As a matter of fact, I either keep Animal Scents or Rose Ointment nearby.
