Did you ever wonder why Lemon Oil is safe for us to drink, but it dissolves plastic and makes it “melt away?”
Chemistry! So, some chemicals have reactions that break down item A, but not item B. For example, olive oil is fine to eat, but it dissolves and breaks down pine sap on your hands (this handy trick will keep you from looking like Clark Griswold on Christmas Vacation). Or how vinegar is fine for us to eat, but it reacts violently with baking soda (think of all those paper mache volcanoes you made as a kid). Vinegar also dissolves corrosion off of copper and iron.
The same is true with many citrus essential oils. These oils can be powerful solvents. The lemon EO dissolves the plastic (that is GREAT for us because our poor cells are full of unwanted plastic residue), but it is gentle and works well with our bodies.
I love this graphic that shows what lemon oil does to Styrofoam (not so natural) vs. what it does to the fragile skin of a Strawberry…nothing!
