Here is an excerpt from one of Gary Young’s books and his experiences using essential oils on his animals

I have raised animals all my life and presently have several miniature horses as well as four teams of draft horses. I also have pygmy goats, barbadoes sheep and llamas at my ranch where I reside. On my 1300 acre herb farm at Whispering Springs in Mona, Utah, I have an animal petting zoo with Bactrian camels. zeeboos from Africa (miniature Bhramas), Watusi cows and bulls, Walleroos (miniature kangaroos), buffalos, miniature donkeys, as well as horses and goats. As you can see we have a wide variety of animals.

We have used the oils extensively on many of the animals and are continually making discoveries. The animals respond extremely well and we feel they have benefited greatly. In my experience, I have found that animals respond to essential oils much the same as humans. One needs only to determine which oils are applicable to the situation and then apply a few drops 3-4 times daily.

Where and How Much to Apply

The amount for small animals, like cats and dogs is like the application for a child: 3-4 drops each time applied. For larger animals, like large dogs apply 6-7 drops, for horses, apply 15-20 drops.

After applying the oils, I have found it beneficial to cover the open wound with Rose ointment, which keeps the skin soft and helps promote the healing. I have applied the oils in the following ways.

Note: treating cats is different than other animals, be sure to avoid using the citrus oils on and around cats.

1. Apply on their paws where absorption is very fast.

2. On cloven hoofed animals, apply on the auricular points of the ears and/or spine or both.

3. Underneath the top lip on the gums and on the tongue.

4. Sprinkle a few drops on the spine and then massage into the skin, just like with humans.

Essential Oil Pet Tips

I have a parrot in a big cage; his name is Madison. I put three to four drops of Purification on the bottom of the cage, which is covered with newspaper, in the morning and at night before going to bed. Madison loves reading the newspaper. The cage smells clean and Madison gets all the benefits of Young Living essential oils. As an added bonus, I use lavender essential oil on Madison’s cage to calm him down when he gets too excited. Birds have a very sensitive respiratory system, and fumes from solvents and cleaners commonly used at home can cause a bird’s death.

My chocolate lab Benson is seven. One day after leaving him, the vet’s office called. Benson was growling at the staff and not cooperating. I put a drop of Roman chamomile essential oil in my hands before entering the office, in hopes that Benson would smell me coming. I asked the doctor if I would interfere with her work if I used a few drops of oil on Benson. She said, ‘No, please do if he enjoys it!’ So, I put a little oil on his paws, nose, and head. He seemed to be instantly happier. The doctor commented that the essential oil was ‘love in a bottle!’

I rescued a mother cat and her two kittens from the local animal shelter after they’d been abandoned. They were weakened from malnutrition and cold weather. On frequent trips to the vet, I was able to reassure and calm them by taking along a bottle of lavender spray and misting the air (or them, if they had an accident). I mix two to three drops of Young Living lavender essential oil with distilled water into a small spray bottle. It is wonderful.

12 year old cocker spaniel whose back legs had stiff joints, couldn’t go for walks or even get up on the couch (heaven forbid). Started putting Sulfurzyme powder on top of the food and within a very short time the dog totally transformed. My dog was becoming more and more terrified during thunderstorms or fireworks. He would shake so badly along with pacing and barking. I used a small amount of Release oil followed by Lavender oil and within minutes he settles down. I have tried other combinations of other essential oils; this seems to work the best. I first rub the oil between my hands, let him smell it, lightly run my hands over his ears, back and legs, rub my palms with what is left on my hands on the front pads of his feet. He is a lean medium size dog and I use about one drop of each oil.

I actually use Young Living Essential Oils on and in birds both wild and domesticated. I found that a drop of citrus oil in an exotic bird’s water makes the bird feel like it is receiving a treat! Thieves cleaner is perfect for cleaning cages, and I make a spray from Lavender oil, citrus oils, and Purification oil and lightly spritz them daily to help them preen and stay well. The birds I work with LOVE to be sprayed with this solution. They balk and flap their wings until I come out with the spray then they each line up, spread their wings and allow me to spritz them. Birds are very amusing!

Iditarod winner trusts Young Living.

Mitch Seavey, musher and winner of the 2013 Iditarod, knows the value of taking care of his dogs. “There’s a saying among mushers [sled drivers] that goes, ‘No feet, no dog,’” he explains. “We have to have animals with tough feet or they won’t do well in the races.
